Grimsby Town pulled off one of the biggest shocks of the season as they dumped Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup (EFL Cup) on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw in regulation time.
The 4th division side, who went toe-to-toe with Ruben Amorim’s men at Blundell Park, found the back of the net twice in the first half. Charles Vernam opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, sending home fans into raptures, before Toby Warren doubled the advantage just eight minutes later.
Manchester United, despite fielding a strong side, looked sluggish and disjointed. Brentford loanee Bryan Mbeumo gave them a lifeline with a smart finish in the 75th minute, before Harry Maguire rose highest to nod home an equaliser with just a minute left on the clock.
The game then went to penalties, where the underdogs held their nerve in front of a supportive home crowd. Grimsby converted 12 of their spot-kicks, while United recorded 11, sending the Mariners through to the third round in fairytale fashion.
Elsewhere in the Carabao Cup, Everton advanced with a 2-0 win over Mansfield. Carlos Alcaraz’s superb strike and Beto’s late tap-in ensured the Toffees booked their place in the next round, though the League One side gave the Premier League side plenty to think about.
At Craven Cottage, Fulham eased past Bristol City in a comfortable 2-0 victory, with Raul Jimenez forcing an own goal before grabbing one himself.
Meanwhile, Brighton showed their attacking depth with a ruthless 6-0 demolition of Oxford United, as debutants Olivier Boscagli, Stefanos Tzimas, and Tom Watson all got on the scoresheet.
