The Ebonyi State Government has approved an increase in the minimum wage for civil servants, moving it from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000.
Naija News reports that the decision was reached during the State Executive Council meeting and was announced by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Ikeuwa Omebe, who said the new wage takes effect immediately and applies to all categories of workers in the state.
According to him, the adjustment is part of the government’s efforts to improve the welfare of employees.
He explained that the administration has also cleared pension arrears and gratuities for retirees dating back to the creation of the state in 1996.
He added that verification of local government retirees is ongoing, after which payments will be made.
The council also discussed the implementation of an eight-year tenure policy for directors.
With this decision, permanent secretaries and directors who have spent the specified period in office will proceed on retirement as directed.
The government maintained that the wage increase and other decisions were made in line with its commitment to meet the needs of the people and uphold workers’ interests.
“We want to state categorically that this is not a political statement, as this government does not toy with workers’ welfare.
“The government has offset the pension and gratuities of state retirees from its creation in 1996 to date.
“The verification process for retirees in the Local Government Areas had commenced and when completed, the payment will be made,” Omebe said.
