Liverpool’s new signing, Alexander Isak, has spoken for the first time about his record-breaking £125m transfer from Newcastle United to Anfield, hinting that not all has been revealed about the circumstances surrounding the move.
Naija News reports that the Sweden striker completed the switch on transfer deadline day, setting a new British transfer record after weeks of speculation and a summer-long standoff with Newcastle.
Speaking after making an appearance for Sweden on Monday, Isak suggested there were behind-the-scenes details that had yet to come to light.
“Not everyone has the full picture, but that’s something for another day,” he said after Sweden’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Kosovo in Pristina.
Despite the controversy, the 24-year-old said he was delighted to join Liverpool.
“I can’t control everything that’s said or written. But I’m happy that I became a Liverpool player,” Isak added.
Naija News reports that Isak came off the bench for the final 18 minutes, replacing Newcastle teammate Anthony Elanga, with Sweden already trailing 2-0.
He registered three shots, two on target, and picked up a yellow card after a clash with Kosovo defender Fidan Aliti.
The forward admitted it was a relief to have the transfer saga settled before international duty.
“It’s great that everything was settled before the camp and that I could focus on playing football again. It’s been a fairly new situation for me, but you always learn and develop mentally off the pitch as well,” he said.
The move to the English Premier League (EPL) champions’ side came after Isak refused to play for Newcastle in pre-season friendlies and missed the opening fixtures of the season. His stance had fueled tension between him and Newcastle’s hierarchy before the deal was finally agreed.
He was also an unused substitute for Sweden’s 2-2 draw in Slovenia on Friday, with manager Jon Dahl Tomasson revealing that Isak had only managed three training sessions with the national team prior to the Kosovo game.
Goals from Elvis Rexhbecaj and Vedat Muriqi handed Kosovo their first points in Group B, while Sweden slipped to third place behind leaders Switzerland and second-placed Kosovo. Kosovo’s Lindon Emerllahu was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card.
With his Liverpool move finally secured, Isak is expected to return sharper and more settled as he prepares for a new chapter in his career under manager Arne Slot at Anfield.
