The families of victims of the 2018 Offa bank robbery have urged Nigerians to disregard persistent claims linking former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to the tragic incident.
They described attempts to politicise the tragedy as “unjust and insensitive,” stressing that their loved ones were victims of a criminal act, not pawns in political battles.
In a statement made available to journalists, the families, represented by Alhaji Abdul Oseni Aditu Eniolohunpa, Hajia Mulikat Jimoh, and Mrs Danjuma Comfort, spoke during a programme on Radio TNT in Offa to address renewed debates surrounding the tragedy.
Alhaji Abdul, who lost his 27-year-old son in the robbery, Hajia Mulikat, mother of one of the victims, and Mrs Danjuma, wife of a slain police officer, emphasised that their loved ones were innocent victims of a violent attack.
They appealed for an end to political exploitation of their grief.
The Offa bank robbery, which occurred on April 5, 2018, saw heavily armed men launch coordinated attacks on several banks and a police station in Offa, Kwara State.
The assault left 33 people dead, including security personnel and residents.
Since then, the incident has repeatedly been dragged into political controversy, with some attempting to link it to Saraki and other prominent figures.
The grieving families revealed that they had previously been approached by individuals urging them to implicate Saraki in the robbery publicly. They rejected such attempts, insisting that it was “unjust” for anyone to exploit their tragedy for political gain.
The families also lamented the lack of support or compensation from the government since the incident. They maintained that their focus remains justice and healing, not political manipulation.
“Our loved ones would not have wanted their deaths to be used as tools for political manipulation,” they declared, urging Nigerians to channel instead efforts towards preventing similar tragedies.
They called on the public to honour the memory of the victims by refusing to allow their pain to be weaponised for political ends.
