Fenerbahçe have parted ways with head coach José Mourinho just months after his high-profile arrival, following a shocking exit from the Champions League qualifiers at the hands of Benfica.
Naija News reports that Benfica knocked Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe out of the UEFA Champions League qualification stage on Wednesday night, August 27.
Following the exit, Istanbul giants confirmed the decision to sack the Portuguese coach on social media earlier today, August 29, thanking Mourinho for his contributions.
“From the 2024-2025 season onwards, our Professional Football First Team and head coach José Mourinho have parted ways. We thank him for all the efforts he has given to our team so far and wish him success in his future career,” The club wrote in Turkish via 𝕏.
Mourinho, who previously managed Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Roma, arrived at Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2024 with hopes of delivering domestic trophies and European glory.
Yet, a combination of inconsistent results, locker room tensions, and failure to reach the Champions League group stage proved costly.
During his stint, Fenerbahçe were eliminated in the Turkish Cup quarter-finals and knocked out of the Europa League by Rangers, leaving the club without silverware. Despite guiding the team to a runner-up finish in the previous season, the Champions League setback overshadowed these achievements.
An interim coach is expected to take charge in the coming hours, as Fenerbahçe search for a permanent replacement to stabilize the team and keep their European ambitions alive.
Fans now face a period of uncertainty as the club looks to regroup and reclaim momentum in both domestic and continental competitions.
