The Kebbi State government has absolved itself of any blame in the attack on the convoy of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
The government added that it was also proactive and ordered investigations immediately after the attack.
Naija News reports that the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Ahmad Idris, who made the submission in a brief interview with Daily Trust, also described as “false and misleading”, claims on social media that the state government was responsible for the violence.
He added that there is no truth in claims that the All Progressives Congress (APC) members were behind the attack on Malami’s convoy, which happened last week.
“The Governor himself has no hand in it. He is innocent. In fact, when the incident happened, he instantly summoned a security meeting headed by the Commissioner of Police to ensure peace was restored. The APC as a party also had no role in the matter,” Idris said.
He added that immediately after the incident, the Governor ordered enhanced security in the state and established a committee headed by the State Commissioner of Police to investigate the matter.
Idris said, “The Governor directed the Commissioner of Police to tighten security across all angles and warned that no political party or individual should engage in campaigns or use sirens at this time. A committee has since been set up by the state government, headed by the CP, to investigate the matter and ensure justice is done to all parties.”
Malami Overstepped His Boundaries
Speaking further, the Governor’s spokesperson explained that Malami breached the law by coming with a convoy and sirens into Birnin Kebbi, which he is no longer entitled to use as an ordinary citizen, thereby disturbing the peace of the town.
He also accused Malami’s supporters of inciting political opponents.
“His group stopped in front of the APC office, shouting slogans, while members inside were observing prayers,” Idris stated.
He stressed that other dignitaries, including the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election and Senator Adamu Aliero, also paid condolence visits to Kebbi without thugs or convoys.
Idris urged the public to remain calm, assuring that peace had returned to Birnin Kebbi within a few hours of the incident, and that everywhere was back to normal life.
