Abdullahi Bashir Haske, a businessman and son-in-law to former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that he is evading arrest after being declared wanted for alleged multi-million-dollar money laundering.
Naija News reports that the EFCC, in an official notice issued last Thursday, declared Haske wanted over alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering linked to contracts with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
According to the anti-graft agency, funds traced to multiple accounts allegedly tied to Haske form part of its ongoing investigation.
In a statement issued through his media office, Haske described the EFCC’s action as “politically motivated” and a deliberate attempt to malign his name.
“I am not on the run. I am committed to clearing my name and cooperating with lawful investigations. All I ask is that EFCC conducts its duties within the ambit of the rule of law and without political interference,” Haske said.
He maintained that he had already honoured the EFCC’s invitation, appeared before investigators, and presented both oral and documentary evidence to prove the legitimacy of his financial dealings.
Haske further accused the EFCC of misconduct, alleging that he was denied administrative bail despite meeting the conditions.
He said, “I was unlawfully detained until my health deteriorated, leading to a near-collapse in custody. It is therefore shocking and disingenuous for EFCC to now claim I am ‘running away’ when they are well aware that my health crisis was precipitated by their own misconduct.”
According to him, his release only came after concerns over his survival due to his worsening medical condition. He is currently receiving treatment.
Haske, who stressed that he has no political ambition, faulted attempts to link his marital ties to political controversies.
He accused the EFCC of attempting to misuse Interpol for political purposes, insisting that the international agency had repeatedly clarified that it would not be drawn into cases tainted by a political witch hunt.
