The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has distanced itself from a controversial post-match statement that singled out striker Cyriel Dessers and captain William Troost-Ekong for criticism after the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with South Africa in Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The statement, which was credited to the NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, accused Dessers of being sluggish and faulted Ekong for the own goal that handed Bafana Bafana their lead.
Reacting on Wednesday, NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, made it clear that the comments did not represent the federation’s official position.
Sanusi said, “I saw the release just like everyone else did. Nobody in the Federation is happy with it.
“The NFF did not authorise that statement. We have great respect for all the players. Blaming an individual for a team result is unfair.”
He stressed that the Federation views the encounter as a collective effort.
“When we win, it’s a team victory. When we lose, it’s also collective. No player should be singled out,” Sanusi added.
Sanusi defended Troost-Ekong, recalling his heroics at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named Most Valuable Player.
“It was an unfortunate own goal. His intention was to clear the ball. Anyone who knows football understands that such things happen,” he explained.
The NFF scribe assured that the Super Eagles remain united as preparations continue for the remaining qualifiers and AFCON.
Sanusi further stated, “Our house is in order. We’re preparing for the rest of the qualifiers and the AFCON in Morocco.
“There’s no problem with our players or coaching crew. Our relationship remains cordial. The government and the NFF are proud of the players’ efforts.”
He also confirmed that internal disciplinary measures would be taken over the unauthorised release.
“I can assure you the NFF will take action on the matter,” he noted.
Nigeria currently sit third in Group C with 11 points from eight matches, while South Africa tops the group on 17 points.
The Super Eagles must now beat Lesotho and the Benin Republic in their remaining fixtures and hope rivals drop points to secure a ticket to the 2026 World Cup in North America.
