An army officer, Major Josiah, who was abducted in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, has been rescued by a palm-wine tapper and lumberers in the deep forest of Tuomo community.
Naija News had earlier reported that the officer was seized from his lodge on Sunday night by armed youths, who ransacked the building before whisking him away to the creeks of Burutu Local Government Area.
A community source told Vanguard that Major Josiah was discovered in the forest where the kidnappers had abandoned their vehicle.
The source said, “A young girl left her father’s palm-wine camp in a canoe early this morning to check her fishing net, and in the process, she saw the army officer sitting inside a canoe in the distance. She rushed back home to tell her dad.
“Her father followed her to the scene and found Major Josiah sitting in the canoe, tied to one of the seats. He had sustained gunshot wounds to his leg and hand. The palm-wine tapper untied him and took him to his camp. He later informed some lumberers, and together they brought him in a canoe through the brook leading to the community.”
Another source, also confirming the rescue, said, “The army officer was heard shouting and wailing in the deep forest of Tuomo, where palm-wine tappers and lumberers establish camps. Some lumberers traced his voice and found him injured and tied up.
“They took him to a palm-wine tapper’s camp and later decided to bring him out. They rowed him through the brook into the community this morning, after which the military Joint Task Force in Bomadi was alerted.”
It was learnt that soldiers from the JTF later moved the officer to safety. Although efforts to speak with the Bomadi military commander proved abortive, a source confirmed to Vanguard that Major Josiah has since been taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
