Tragedy struck in Amaeze community, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, when a police inspector was killed during a clash between operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Naija News learnt that the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, also left several officers injured.
Confirming the development to Punch, the Chairman of Ivo Local Government Council, Emmanuel Ajah, said the Divisional Police Officer briefed him in the area.
Ajah said, “I was informed by the DPO that there was a clash involving the police and civil defence officers in the Amaeze community, and unfortunately, one police officer lost his life in the process.”
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that the deceased officer, identified simply as Inspector Shedrack, might have been mistakenly shot by fellow policemen.
According to him, the confrontation began when three Hilux vans carrying about 30 policemen allegedly opened fire on an NSCDC van conveying mining equipment to a site in Amaeze.
The source said, “In the course of the fracas, Shedrack allegedly attempted to disarm a civil defence officer. But when other policemen tried to shoot at the NSCDC operative, they mistakenly hit their colleague, who died on the spot, while some others sustained gunshot injuries.”
The body of the deceased inspector has since been deposited in a morgue, while the injured officers were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
As of the time of filing this report on Thursday, neither the police command nor the NSCDC authorities in Ebonyi State had issued an official statement on the incident.
