Nottingham Forest are set to turn to Ange Postecoglou as their next manager following the sacking of Nuno Espírito Santo, who was dismissed in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Naija News reports that Forest confirmed Nuno’s departure in a statement, “Following recent circumstances, Nuno Espírito Santo has today been relieved of his duties as head coach. The club thanks Nuno for his contribution during a very successful era at the City Ground, in particular his role in the 2024/25 season, which will forever be remembered fondly in the history of the club.”
Nuno, who guided Forest to seventh place last season and European qualification for the first time in 30 years, became the first Premier League manager to lose his job this season after admitting his relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis had soured.
Nuno said last month, “I always had a very good relationship with the owner. Last season we were very close and spoke on a daily basis. This season it is not so well.
“Our relationship has changed and we are not as close. Everybody at the club should be together but this is not the reality.”
The cracks widened after a touchline confrontation with Marinakis during a 2-2 draw against Leicester in May, and Nuno later slammed the club’s transfer dealings, saying his squad had been left “unbalanced” and he was “worried” about their prospects.
British media reported that Postecoglou, sacked by Tottenham in June just days after winning the Europa League, is the frontrunner to take charge and could be appointed before Saturday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.
Despite ending Spurs’ 17-year trophy drought, the Australian was dismissed after a dismal league campaign that saw Tottenham finish 17th, their worst season since 1976/77.
His free-flowing attacking style contrasts sharply with Nuno’s more cautious, pragmatic approach that had brought stability to Forest.
Nuno had taken over in December 2023 after Steve Cooper was sacked, saving the club from relegation and spearheading their European push.
However, after a 3-0 home defeat to West Ham in what proved to be his final game, Marinakis opted to move in a different direction.
Forest currently sit 10th in the Premier League with four points from three matches and remain among the favourites to go deep in the Europa League this season.
