A prominent businessman and politician, Jerry Damara, has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Naija News reports that Damara, a former PDP chieftain, was formally received into the APC on Thursday after presenting his membership card to Governor Muhammadu Yahaya at the Government House, Gombe.
He was accompanied by several of his supporters in what observers described as one of the biggest political alignments in the state in recent years.
Explaining his defection, Damara said he was attracted by the governor’s developmental projects and inclusive governance.
“Your Excellency, from today, my loyalty to you and your administration is total. The developmental train you are driving is unstoppable, and I refuse to be left behind,” he declared.
The Tangale-Waja politician revealed that his decision followed extensive consultations with elders and political stakeholders in Gombe South.
He explained that they collectively resolved to end years of political division in the area and align fully with the ruling APC.
“Our resolution is to embrace the ruling party and contribute to building a united front for progress,” he added.
Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 elections, Adewole Adebayo, has said the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, is not a member of the party.
Naija News reports that Adebayo, during an interview with journalists, was questioned about El Rufai’s current status, specifically whether he is a member of his party or the ADC.
He replied, “We know about him being in the coalition.”
Speaking further, Adebayo reiterated that El-Rufai is not a member of the SDP, and he is welcome if he has an interest in joining the party.
He stressed, “Well, what I can say, and that is secondhand information, is that from party records, from what party officials are saying, he’s not a member of the party. But if he wants to be a member of the party, I’m not against him being a member of the party.
“I just have to follow what the party says clearly. But the party officials will explain how the processes work. What I can say is that this is how you know a member of a party. You will see their name in the ward register, where they come from. And at the national level, the national secretary will have overall numbers of members and their particulars. But one way or the other, it’s left for the member and the party to try to work it out. And we who are inside the party have been advising one way or the other to see how that can happen.”
