President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday departed Brasília, Brazil, for Abuja after a three-day state visit that focused on strengthening Nigeria–Brazil bilateral relations.
Naija News learnt that the presidential jet took off from the Brasília International Airport Air Force Base at about 12:57 a.m. (local time).
At the airport to see him off were Amb. Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, and Amb. Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete, Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria.
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, alongside other top government officials, also joined in the departure ceremony, which featured a guard of honour led by Col. Cel Nicolas.
Strategic Diplomatic Engagement
Tinubu had arrived in Brasília on Monday, August 25, where he was received with full military honours before proceeding to meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and senior Brazilian officials.
The two leaders held private discussions and witnessed the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering aviation, foreign affairs, science and technology, and agriculture—sectors the Nigerian President identified as critical to his government’s development agenda.
During the visit, Tinubu also met with the Director-General of Brazil’s Securities and Exchange Commission and the Board of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc.
He praised the performance of Nigeria’s capital market, describing it as “a clear sign of investor confidence” in the administration’s reforms.
Diaspora Engagement
On the sidelines of his meetings, President Tinubu engaged Nigerian professionals and community leaders in Brazil, urging them to actively contribute to national development.
“You are the pride of our nation. Your diversity and commitment reflect the Nigeria we are working to build,” Tinubu told the diaspora group.
The President also used the opportunity to push for stronger cooperation between both countries in the areas of trade, education, and innovation, while emphasising Nigeria’s readiness to learn from Brazil’s development experience.
