Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Saturday, 6th September, 2025.
1. No Holiday Is More Important Than The Nigerian Lives You Swore To Protect – Obi Knocks Tinubu Over Annual Leave Trip
Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has knocked President Bola Tinubu for spending much of his tenure abroad, questioning the timing and priorities of his trips.
Naija News reports that Obi, in a tweet on Friday, pointed out that Tinubu left the country again for Europe barely six days after returning from a previous engagement, marking what is reportedly his tenth visit to France in two years.
Obi highlighted the contrast between the President’s frequent foreign trips and the pressing challenges Nigerians face at home.
He said that over 79% of the population is experiencing food insecurity, while Nigeria has recently been ranked among the worst countries for childbirth, living conditions, and life expectancy.
The former Governor also raised concerns over recent security and humanitarian crises, including attacks in Katsina State that killed more than 50 people and left over 60 kidnapped, as well as a tragic boat accident in Niger State that claimed 60 lives.
He questioned why the President had not visited affected areas to comfort grieving families before departing on holiday.
Obi called for leadership that prioritizes the welfare and safety of Nigerians, stressing that no holiday should take precedence over the lives of citizens.
He urged the government to focus on healthcare, education, poverty reduction, and security to create meaningful change in the country.
2. “Some People Have Been Giving Wrong Information About This” – FG Clarifies ₦500 Fuel Tax
The federal government has clarified that certain reports in circulation about Nigerians paying a ₦500 fuel surcharge on every ₦10,000 worth of fuel bought from January 2026 are inaccurate and misleading.
The government stated that while the new tax law provides for a fuel surcharge under the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Act, the provision has not yet taken effect.
It added that contrary to claims that Nigerians would start paying the ₦500 surcharge as from January 2026, the implementation date will only be determined by an official order from the Minister of Finance.
Naija News reports that the clarification was made in a video by the Chairman of the Presidential Tax Reform Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, which was made public by the State House.
Oyedele stated that the intended purpose of the surcharge is to channel revenues into transport infrastructure projects, which he claimed would eventually reduce the cost of logistics, ease the burden on commuters, and bring down inflation for ordinary Nigerians.
3. “Lagos Belongs To All Of Us” – Rhodes-Vivour Reacts As Police Seal ADC Meeting Venue
Former Lagos State governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has condemned the sealing of the venue where the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was scheduled to hold a meeting on Saturday.
Rhodes-Vivour, in a statement via his 𝕏 account on Friday, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being behind the sealing and accused the ruling party of using state resources to stifle opposition voices in Lagos.
He lamented that the ADC had obtained all necessary approvals for the venue, but the APC, out of fear for the growing popularity of the opposition party and the Obidient movement, used security forces to shut down the venue for the political meeting.
The politician, however, vowed that they won’t succumb to any form of intimidation or harassment, insisting that Lagos “belongs to all of us.”
4. ‘Peter Obi’s Single-term Presidency Proposal Is Purely Political Strategy’ – Kenneth Okonkwo
Veteran Nollywood actor cum politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has suggested that the single-term presidency proposal of the Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is a political strategy to curry favour from the North.
Naija News reports that Okonkwo stated this on Friday while fielding questions on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
According to the thespian, Peter Obi knows that if he does not make the promise, he would lose votes from the northern region of the country during the 2027 election.
Kenneth Okonkwo argued that any party serious about defeating an incumbent must agree that its presidential candidate would serve for one term so that no side will feel cheated.
5. Fuel Scarcity Looms As NUPENG Orders Tanker Drivers To Shun Dangote Depots
Nigeria may be heading into another round of fuel scarcity across the nation as a brewing confrontation between the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Dangote Refinery threatens to disrupt petroleum product distribution nationwide.
Naija News understands that NUPENG has directed its Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch to stop loading petroleum products from Dangote depots starting Monday, September 8.
In a statement signed by NUPENG President, Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, the union accused Dangote Refinery of anti-labour practices inimical to the survival and livelihoods of its members.
At the centre of the dispute is Dangote Refinery’s reported insistence that drivers recruited for its 10,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks will not be allowed to join any trade union.
NUPENG described this as “an affront on the right of association guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution, and a breach of international labour laws to which Nigeria is a signatory.”
The union said several appeals, including interventions with the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), urging Dangote to reverse his stance, had been ignored.
NUPENG further alleged that on August 29, MRS Holdings, owned by Dangote’s cousin, Alhaji Sayyu Dantata, began recruiting drivers under the condition that they must sign undertakings not to join any union.
6. ‘I’m Old Enough To Take A Stand’ – Kwankwaso’s Ally, Jibrin Speaks On Dumping NNPP
The member representing Kiru/Bebeji constituency in the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has hinted at dumping the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
Naija News reports that Jibrin, a close ally of former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, made this known in an interview with DCL Hausa.
The lawmaker also said he is old enough to take a stand independently on what is best for him politically.
According to Jibrin, he joined Kwankwasiyya as a wealthy individual and has utilised his resources to support the movement, just as the party helped him secure his return to the red chamber in 2023.
Jibrin, however, said he will continue to respect Kwankwaso as his leader, even if they are no longer in the same party.
The lawmaker also stated that none of the northern political leaders helped him when he was suspended from the House of Representatives in 2016, after he accused the House leadership of budget padding.
7. DSS Files Charges Against Arrested Ansaru Commanders
The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly filed multiple charges against two arrested commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group, Abu Baraa and Mahmuda.
Speaking to Zagazola Makama on Friday, security sources said the suspects, who were recently apprehended in a covert operation, are facing terrorism-related charges under Nigeria’s anti-terrorism laws.
The sources explained that the charges border on leadership of a terrorist organisation, financing of terrorism, recruitment, and coordinating violent attacks in Nigeria.
According to a source, the DSS has expedited investigations to ensure speedy prosecution in line with the directive of its Director-General, who emphasised professionalism, justice, and the protection of human rights in handling terrorism cases.
He added that the arraignment of the suspects before the Federal High Court, Abuja, is expected in the coming days.
Recall that the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, had disclosed that the Federal Government captured Baraa and Mahmuda, two notorious terrorist leaders wanted globally.
According to Ribadu, the duo are top commanders of the Ansaru Terrorist Organisation, otherwise known as Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan, an Al-Qaeda affiliate in Nigeria, as well as the Mahmudawa terrorist group.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the NSA explained that the capture was the outcome of a carefully coordinated security operation conducted within the last two months.

Nollywood actress Regina Daniels has revealed that she can allow her husband, Senator Ned Nwoko, to be with her friend under certain circumstances.
Naija News reports that she shared her view in a post on Instagram, where she has over 15 million followers.
The actress explained that if a close friend had been single for a long time, she would be open to letting that friend spend time with her husband.
Daniels reposted a video of a woman who claimed she allowed her best friend to be with her man after being single for more than six months.
The woman wrote: “My friend was single for over 6months so I lent her my man.”
Reacting to the clip, the actress said she could also do the same for a friend facing a similar situation.
She wrote: “Something I can do though.”
9. ‘He Didn’t Die From Bathroom Accident’ – Peju Ogunmola’s Family Reveal Cause Of Son’s Death
The family of veteran Nollywood actress, Peju Ogunmola, has broken silence on the death of her only child, Ayomikun.
Naija News reports that the Yoruba movie industry was thrown into mourning over the demise of Ayomikun alleged to have died in the UK after suffering a bathroom incident.
However, in a statement released on Friday, the family via its spokesperson, Yemi Amodu, debunked the claims that Ayomikun died due to an incident in the bathroom.
Amodu said Ayomikun died after a brief illness in Ibadan and has since been buried.
10. ‘Neymar To Inherit £846 Million From Brazilian Billionaire’
Brazilian football star Neymar could soon become even richer after reports emerged that an anonymous billionaire has left him a staggering £846 million inheritance.
Local outlet RIC reported that the businessman, who recently passed away, formalised his will in Porto Alegre on June 12, 2025, in the presence of witnesses and a substitute notary. The document is now with the Brazilian courts, which must decide whether Neymar can legally be recognised as the sole heir.
Remarkably, the two men never met. According to reports, the billionaire was single, childless, and said to have admired Neymar for his family values, particularly his close bond with his father, Neymar Sr.
The inheritance, estimated at around 6.2 billion Brazilian Real (£846m), is said to include property, investments, and company shares. However, even if the courts approve the will, legal experts suggest the process could still face delays, taxes, or disputes.
