English Premier League leaders, Liverpool, are closing in on the signing of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi after the defender began his medical in London on transfer deadline day.
Naija News reports that the Premier League champions had opened talks earlier this month and tabled a £35 million bid on Saturday with a 10 per cent sell-on clause.
Palace initially held out for £40m, but both clubs have now reached an agreement.
Palace boss Oliver Glasner had been desperate to keep his skipper, but with Guehi entering the final 12 months of his contract, the Eagles felt they had little choice but to do business.
Talks over Liverpool’s Joe Gomez being included in the deal never materialised, with the Reds unwilling to part with their versatile defender.
Glasner, speaking after his side’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, where Guehi scored a stunning goal, insisted the club had broken an internal promise.
“We had a meeting in March and we had an agreement that we’re just selling Marc if we have the right replacement in,” Glasner said.
“This was July 9, today is August 31, there is no replacement in the building. So it is clear that one part of the agreement is not fulfilled, that means we can’t sell Marc.
“And it’s not for Oliver Glasner. It’s necessary for playing a successful season. We had a great start, we are in European football for the first time and our fans deserve to have the best players available.”
Palace Eye Replacements
Palace have been linked with several defensive targets this summer, including Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande, Roma’s Evan Ndicka and Toulouse youngster Jaydee Canvot. Brighton’s Julio Igor is also expected to arrive on loan, which has paved the way for Guehi’s departure.
Liverpool’s Spending Nears £360 Million
Naija News reports that the £35m deal takes Liverpool’s total summer spending to around £360m, with Alexander Isak of Newcastle tipped to break the British transfer record later today in a £125m move.
Meanwhile, Arsenal, who have been active in the market themselves, are enjoying a strong start to the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.
Mikel Arteta’s men sit firmly in the top three, combining defensive stability with attacking flair.
New arrivals have already begun to impress, as the Gunners continue to mount a serious challenge for the title in the early weeks of the season.
