In a bid to make Europe’s premier club football event more accessible to fans worldwide, UEFA has moved the kick-off time of the Champions League final from 8 p.m. to 6 p.m. starting from this season.
According to the European football governing body, the change in the kick-off time of the Champions League final is aimed at making the event more accessible to both stadium-goers and the global TV audience.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said: “With this change, we are placing the fans’ experience at the heart of our planning. The UEFA Champions League final is the highlight of the football season, and the new kick-off time will make it even more accessible, inclusive, and impactful for everyone involved.
“While a 21:00CET kick-off is well suited for midweek matches, an earlier kick-off on a Saturday for the final means an earlier finish – regardless of extra time or penalties – and offers fans the opportunity to enjoy the rest of the evening with friends and family, reflecting on the game of the season.”
Naija News reports that this year’s 2024/2025 final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan, held at Budapest’s Puskas Arena, started at 9:00 pm local time (8 p.m. Nigerian time).
While the late-night slot has been a staple of high-profile finals, it posed problems for families and travelling supporters, particularly those coming from other countries. UEFA’s adjustment aims to strike the perfect balance between in-stadium excitement and worldwide broadcast convenience.
An earlier kickoff means fans can enjoy pre-match festivities, get home at a reasonable hour, and soak in post-match celebrations without feeling rushed.
For international viewers, especially across Asia and the Americas, 6:00 pm local time ensures better viewing windows, making it easier to watch the game in a friendlier hour.
