Warri Wolves have been slammed with a ₦1 million fine by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for failing to provide adequate security during their home clash with Enugu Rangers on Sunday.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the NPFL board said the Seasiders breached its Framework and Rules after the Matchday Two fixture at the Ozoro Stadium was delayed because of “a failure to provide prompt, adequate and effective security arrangements.”
“The Warri club have been fined N1 million for failing to provide prompt, adequate & effective security for the Matchday 2 fixture,” the NPFL announced.
“The club is required to put in place an effective matchday security arrangement and submit it to the board within the stipulated period. They also have the right to appeal within 48 hours.”
The league has given Wolves seven working days to submit a comprehensive security plan, with the option to challenge the sanction within 48 hours of receiving the notice.
Interestingly, the disciplinary action comes at a time when Wolves have made a flawless start to the 2025/26 campaign. The team followed up a narrow 1-0 win in their opener with a commanding 2-0 victory over Rangers.
The game, which kicked off late due to the security issues, eventually saw Oham Godwin break the deadlock in the 48th minute with a superb curling effort from distance. Prince Ebhohan later doubled the lead with a well-timed header from a corner, sealing back-to-back victories.
The win lifted Wolves to second on the NPFL log, level on points with Bayelsa United, who are the only other side boasting a 100 per cent record after two matches. Wolves’ next big test is away to defending champions Remo Stars in Abeokuta.
Meanwhile, in Maiduguri, El-Kanemi Warriors have hailed new signing Hakeem Otuyiga for his early impact. The goalkeeper, who joined from Akwa United, has already featured in the Borno Army’s opening two games of the season.
Club media director Aliyu Mustapha praised the depth and competition Otuyiga has brought, saying: “His arrival, alongside Iddrisu Ibrahim, Francis Achem and Modu Milo, has brought added depth and fierce competition to El-Kanemi Warriors’ goalkeeping department. It is a positive sign for the team’s ambitions this season.”
El-Kanemi have so far recorded a win and a draw in their opening fixtures as they look to build momentum for the new season.
