Former Super Eagles forward, Anthony Ujah, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34.
The striker, who spent most of his career in Germany, confirmed the decision on Friday through an emotional Instagram post.
Ujah, who last played for Bulgarian club Botev Plovdiv, said stepping away from the game was the hardest choice he had ever made.
“Today, I make the toughest decision of my life, retiring from professional football.
“I also want to thank every club I have played for, every coach who believed in me, and every teammate who fought beside me on the pitch. Together, we’ve shared victories that will forever warm my heart and defeats that taught me resilience,” he wrote.
He added that playing for Nigeria’s Super Eagles was a dream fulfilled.
“Fulfilling a childhood dream of playing for my country is one I will forever live to cherish,” Ujah noted.
Naija News reports that the striker endured a difficult final year at Botev Plovdiv, where a persistent knee injury kept him out for much of the season.
He missed 40 matches and managed only five appearances, though he scored twice before his contract expired in July.
Ujah remains a cult hero at FC Köln, where his goals fired the club back to the Bundesliga in 2014. His iconic celebration with the club’s goat mascot further endeared him to fans.
Over a 15-year career, Ujah scored 113 goals, with his biggest club honour being the German 2. Bundesliga title with Köln.
Ujah earned seven caps for the Nigerian national team, though he never found the back of the net.
Reflecting on his journey, Ujah described football as more than just a profession.
He said: “Football has been more than a game for me; it has been my passion, my identity, my home. I will truly miss the emotions, the atmosphere, the dressing room laughter, the celebrations, and even the hard days that made the good ones sweeter.
“A new chapter begins, but my love for football will never end.”
