Azibaola Robert, the cousin of former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has debunked claims that he has stepped aside from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
Naija News reports that this follows a report which alleged that the Otuoke-born politician had ruled himself out of the race to preserve Southern unity.
Although Jonathan has not formally declared his intention to run, strong indications suggest that he has been holding consultations across the country to actualise what would be his second term bid.
On Friday, Robert took to his verified Facebook page to clarify that the former president has not made any statement suggesting he would not run in 2027.
According to Vanguard, Robert dismissed the report by Newsweek Nigeria titled “Jonathan Rejects Pressure to Contest in 2027, Says he won’t be used against Southern unity”, describing it as fake and misleading.
He stated that the alleged aide of Jonathan, as quoted in the story, does not exist.
Robert stated, “The former president has made it clear that he would not yield to calls not to run since those making such admonition had selfish motives.”
The former president’s cousin further explained that Jonathan had neither confirmed nor ruled out his participation in the 2027 election.
“He has not told anyone that he will not contest when the time for election is ripe,” Robert stressed, noting that any contrary claim should be disregarded.
