The Osun State Police Command has arrested six suspected cult members alleged to be terrorising Osogbo and neighbouring communities.
Naija News reports that the command’s spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, noting that the arrests were part of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan’s, efforts to clamp down on cultism and other criminal vices across the state.
Ojelabi explained that on August 21, at about 6:30 p.m., during a student union week event at one of the state’s higher institutions, two suspects were apprehended following intelligence reports.
He said, “The anti-cultism unit of the command arrested two suspected notorious cultists, with the nicknames ‘ORIFE’ and ‘AGA’, both 29 years old. They confessed to being members of Aiye and Buccaneer confraternities (Alora) respectively.”
The police spokesman further revealed that on August 19, four additional suspects were arrested in Okuku Town and its environs.
Ojelabi further stated, “Police detectives from the anti-cultism unit of the command moved swiftly to the town, where four suspects were apprehended. The suspects confessed to being members of Aiye confraternity.”
In another operation, Ojelabi said police stormed the hideout of armed hoodlums suspected to be members of the Eiye confraternity, led by a gang leader identified as ‘Gafari’, who had been terrorising residents of Gbeja and Oke-Baale in Osogbo.
Although the suspects fled on sighting the security operatives, items recovered from their hideout included:
- One cut-to-size single-barrel gun
- One cut-to-size double-barreled gun
- Five sharp cutlasses
- One axe
- Three live cartridges
Ojelabi said efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects, while those in custody would be charged in court upon conclusion of investigations.
He quoted the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, as warning students to shun cultism and focus on their education.
“The law will not spare anyone caught involved in cultism,” the CP was quoted as saying.
