Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has completed a season-long loan move to Turkish giants Trabzonspor, the club confirmed on Friday.
Naija News reports that the 29-year-old Cameroonian professional footballer, who joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 for an initial €51m plus add-ons, departs Old Trafford after a turbulent spell marked by inconsistency and costly errors.
Onana arrived at United as a replacement for long-serving keeper David de Gea, but struggled to settle in England.
Despite helping United lift the FA Cup in his debut campaign, his performances were regularly criticised, particularly in Europe, where high-profile errors raised questions about his reliability.
His second season began in a similar fashion, with a hamstring injury ruling him out of pre-season and a mistake in his first game contributing to United’s shock Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town.
The deadline-day signing of Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens from Antwerp for €21m plus add-ons pushed Onana further down the pecking order, paving the way for his move to Trabzonspor.
Confirming the deal, United said: “André Onana has joined Trabzonspor on loan for the duration of the 2025/26 season, subject to international clearance and registration. The move has been completed ahead of the Turkish transfer window closing on Friday. We would like to wish André good luck.”
Onana’s Glory Days At Ajax
Naija News reports that before his difficult spell in England, Onana had established himself as one of Europe’s brightest goalkeepers at Ajax, where he spent seven years between 2015 and 2022.
At the Amsterdam club, he won three Eredivisie titles, reached the 2017 Europa League final, and was a key figure in Ajax’s stunning run to the 2019 Champions League semi-finals.
His agility, distribution, and shot-stopping earned him global recognition, though his career was briefly interrupted by a nine-month doping ban in 2021, which he insisted was the result of mistakenly taking his wife’s medication.
Onana At Inter Milan
In 2022, Onana signed for Inter Milan, where he enjoyed a brief but successful spell. He quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper, helping Inter win the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana, while playing a pivotal role in their run to the 2023 Champions League final, where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Manchester City.
His exploits in Italy earned him the move to Manchester United, but his time in the Premier League failed to replicate the form he showed in the Netherlands and Italy.
Now at Trabzonspor, Onana is expected to be installed as the club’s No. 1 goalkeeper, as they aim to challenge domestically and in Europe.
For Onana, the move represents a chance to rediscover the consistency and confidence that once made him one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in European football.
Meanwhile, Manchester United will turn their attention to Sunday’s Premier League derby clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, their first big test since the summer reshuffle in goal.
