The ancient city of Daura in Katsina State, home of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, is playing host to this year’s International Hausa Day celebration, with the palace of the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar, serving as the main venue.
Naija News reports that the annual Hausa Day, first marked in 2015, has since grown into a global cultural event celebrated every August 26 across continents, although it has yet to receive official recognition from the United Nations.
Daura was chosen as host for the 2025 edition due to its historic status as the cradle of the Hausa people and the birthplace of Hausa language and identity.
This year’s celebration is also the first to enjoy full state backing through the Katsina State History and Culture Bureau.

Participants from 25 Countries Expected
Organisers say representatives from 25 countries across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas are participating, projecting Daura to a global audience of millions as the cultural heartland of the Hausa people.
The day-long programme will include:
- A grand Durbar procession showcasing traditional Hausa horsemanship and regalia,
- Cultural exhibitions featuring Hausa history, attire, crafts, and cuisine,
- Academic symposiums by leading scholars on the relevance of Hausa language in the modern world.
In his remark earlier, the founder of Hausa Day, journalist and global advocate Abdulbaqi Jari, highlighted the significance of the celebration and the growing influence of the language.
“Hausa is currently the 11th most spoken language globally and is projected to become the fifth most spoken language by 2050,” Jari said, stressing that Hausa is now a linguistic force with growing international relevance.
According to him, the day was established to promote and preserve Hausa language and culture, foster unity among Hausa-speaking communities worldwide, and highlight the economic and creative potential of Hausa heritage in today’s interconnected world.
