Utah prosecutors have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with seven offences, including aggravated murder, over the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on September 10 at Utah Valley University.
Naija News reports that Robinson, a trade school student, is accused of shooting Kirk during an event on campus.
This led to a swift investigation that ended with his surrender to authorities after persuasion from his family.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray said his office has filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty.
Robinson will first appear in court via video to hear the charges and confirm legal representation.
A preliminary hearing will follow, where the state must show probable cause before the case proceeds to arraignment and eventually trial.
Investigators say surveillance footage captured Robinson entering the campus armed and later fleeing after shots were fired.
Messages he sent to his partner said he had been planning the attack for more than a week, describing Kirk as someone he believed spread hatred.
Bullet casings recovered carried unusual engravings tied to online culture.
Robinson’s parents told investigators that he had grown more politically outspoken in recent months, often clashing with his father over views.
After the shooting, he reportedly confessed to his parents and partner, before being convinced to turn himself in with the help of a retired sheriff.
The charges filed include aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and committing a violent crime in the presence of a child.
Prosecutors alleged the attack targeted Kirk’s political expression and endangered children present at the event.
Robinson will remain in custody without bail as the case moves forward.
