Italian goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma says Manchester City was the only destination he wanted this summer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, describing his switch to the Premier League champions as a “dream move.”
Naija News reports that Gianluigi Donnarumma completed a £26 million transfer to City on deadline day after PSG boss Luis Enrique deemed him surplus to requirements, despite the goalkeeper helping the French side win three trophies last season, including the Champions League.
“I was very clear, my desire was to come here,” Donnarumma told reporters. “That was my only option, the only thing I wanted. My only choice was to come here… so I am happy to be here at City and be part of this fantastic team.”
The 26-year-old made an instant impression on his debut, keeping a clean sheet in City’s 3-0 derby win over Manchester United. He was mobbed by teammates, including Erling Haaland, after pulling off a stunning save to deny Bryan Mbeumo.
Donnarumma praised Haaland, saying: “Aside from being a fantastic player, one of the best in the world, if not the best in the world, he is a fantastic person as well, and that is what makes him even better in a way. I have an incredible relationship with him; he immediately welcomed me. It feels like I have been here for many years.”
The Italy captain stressed the unity within the squad. “The behaviour of a team has to be that, it has to be like a family, and when a team-mate scores a goal, you have to all celebrate as if it were a goal scored. That is important for me, we have to all be united.”
Donnarumma will face his hometown club Napoli in the Champions League on Thursday, a tie he described as “difficult” under manager Antonio Conte.
“I am very tied to Napoli. I have so many friends and my family who live there,” he said. “I am very excited about Thursday’s match. I would be a bit more excited if it were in Napoli. My mum is having a few issues but I am hoping she is going to be on my side.”
