Former Liverpool defender, Steve Nicol, has called on Manchester United to part ways with their manager, Ruben Amorim, following the club’s 3-0 thrashing by Manchester City in Sunday’s Premier League derby.
Naija News reports that the Red Devils were outclassed at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with Phil Foden opening the scoring sheet and Erling Haaland netting a double to seal an emphatic win for Pep Guardiola’s men.
Reacting on ESPN FC’s YouTube channel, Nicol said Amorim’s refusal to adapt was hurting United.
He stated, “Well, they need to change him [Amorim] then. There is no point waiting. He is basically saying, ‘next time we step on the field, this is what we’re dishing out again because I’m not changing anything’.”
The ex-Scotland international further criticised the lack of initiative in the squad. “There is nobody in the United team that is going to change anything either. It looks a little bit like self-preservation, to be honest, because there is certainly no team there,” he added.
Since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag earlier this year, Manchester United have struggled for consistency.
They have managed only three wins in their last eight league games, with back-to-back defeats against Arsenal and City raising fresh concerns about his tactical approach.
Despite some promising attacking displays earlier in his tenure, United remain outside the top four and have conceded 12 goals in their last five matches, fuelling criticism from pundits and fans alike.
The derby humiliation has intensified calls for a change, with Nicol’s remarks echoing a growing sentiment that Amorim’s philosophy may not be working at Old Trafford.
