Human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), has weighed in on the report that Dangote fuel sells cheaper in Togo than in Nigeria.
Naija News reports that Falana expressed his concerns while responding to questions in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday.
The senior lawyer urged the federal government to review the proposed 5 per cent fuel surcharge and ensure that it is not accused of multiple taxes and that further hardship is not imposed on Nigerians.
He said, “I guess the government wants to go back to the drawing table and ensure that it is not accused of multiple taxes or double taxation because consumers will pay VAT for buying fuel. They will now put an additional 5 per cent tax.
“I think this is what Nigerians are complaining about. And from what we just read today is that the Dangote fuel taken from Nigeria is now cheaper in Togo than in Nigeria I think about 65 naira.
“So, the government will have to review these developments (the proposed 5 per cent fuel surcharge) and ensure more hardship is not imposed on Nigerians.”
In other news, Femi Falana (SAN) has taken a swipe at the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) over the proposed review of salaries for political office holders.
Naija News reports that RMAFC had proposed an increase in politicians’ salaries.
However, the senior lawyer, while featuring on ‘Sunrise Daily’, a programme on Channels Television, on Tuesday, described the development as insensitive in light of the country’s current economic realities.
