Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu has declared that his team will fight for the ultimate prize when Nigeria competes at the 2025 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile.
The Flying Eagles, seven-time African champions, have come close to lifting the global title in the past, finishing as runners-up in 1989 and 2005. The most recent campaign ended in disappointment, with the Nigerian youth team bowing out in the quarter-finals against South Korea at the 2023 edition in Argentina.
This time, however, Zubairu is confident his side can break new ground. “We wish to surpass the past records, but we will take it one step at a time,” the coach told reporters in Chile. “Get out of the group, and then we’ll think of the next step.”
Naija News reports that the Flying Eagles have been drawn into a challenging Group F for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where they will face Colombia, Saudi Arabia, and Norway.
The Flying Eagles secured their place in the global competition after finishing third at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations held in Egypt.
With only the top two teams in each group guaranteed to advance to the Round of 16, Nigeria faces stiff competition to progress beyond the group stage.
Other African representatives at the tournament include South Africa, Morocco, and Egypt.
The biennial tournament will run from September 27 to October 19, 2025. Nigeria will kick off their campaign against Norway on Monday, September 29.
