The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stated that former president Goodluck Jonathan must follow due process before contesting for the 2027 presidency.
Acknowledging Jonathan’s right to contest, the party asserted that the PDP is an inclusive platform where eligible members are free to aspire to any office in accordance with party guidelines and the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
Speaking to Punch on Tuesday, the chairman of the party in Abia State, Abraham Amah noted that the presidential candidate of the party would be determined through a free and fair election.
He, however, stated that Jonathan is yet to formally approach the party with his manifesto.
He said, “The attention of the Abia State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party has been drawn to speculations and inquiries regarding the possible interest of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in contesting the presidential ticket of our great party in the forthcoming general elections. Jonathan has the right to contest.
“The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party will be determined through a free, fair, transparent, and democratic presidential convention of the party. It is not a matter of personal preferences, wishful thinking, or unilateral endorsements by any individual member, group, or structure within the party.
“As a former President and a respected leader of the party, Dr.Goodluck Jonathan enjoys the constitutional right to contest for the party’s ticket if he so desires.
“The PDP remains an open, inclusive platform where every eligible member is free to aspire to any office in accordance with party guidelines and the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution”.
He pointed added, “we are aware that some influential interest groups within the PDP strongly believe that Dr. Jonathan is eminently qualified to give the party a strong and competitive representation at the national level.”
Amah said these opinions are noted, but said the decision ultimately rests with the delegates at the convention.
“Abia PDP’s engagements remain open. At this time, former President Jonathan is yet to formally approach the Abia PDP with his policy direction, vision, or manifesto. We believe, however, that it is not too late for him or any other aspirant to engage with our chapter and seek our support.
“Our doors are open to all aspirants. Until such a time when all aspirants present their plans and the convention decides, the Abia PDP remains neutral. Our doors are open to all intending presidential aspirants to formally present themselves, their manifestos, and their vision for Nigeria.
“The Abia PDP is keenly monitoring political developments across the country and within the party. At the appropriate time, we will make our official position known in line with the collective interest of our members and stakeholders,” Amah said.
