The Director-General of the African Writers Institute, Udenta O. Udenta, has said former President, Goodluck Jonathan stands a strong chance of winning in Northern Nigeria if he decides to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Naija News reports that Udenta stated this on Daily Politics, a programme aired on Trust TV, where he claimed that northern leaders now regret rejecting Jonathan in 2015.
According to him, conversations with northern leaders revealed a renewed admiration for Jonathan’s leadership.
“The North which rejected him in 2015, based on my conversation with some leaders from the region, now said they made a great mistake in that rejection,” Udenta stated.
He further stated that there was growing nostalgia across the region.
“That nostalgic feeling that he should come and salvage the country is growing. And if he does, I can bet you that the North will heave in technology shift away from everybody,” he said.
When asked whether Jonathan still had political capital to leverage, Udenta argued that the former president’s eligibility for only one more term could appeal to northern politicians.
“The big deal for Jonathan, and most crucial, let’s be practical about that, he has only one term. That is key for the North because of course in 2031, there won’t be argument. That’s why Peter Obi was quick to say he has only one term to do,” he explained.
