Tragedy struck on Tuesday when a fire gutted Afriland Towers, a high-rise building on Broad Street, Lagos, which houses the offices of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), United Capital Plc (UCAP), a branch of United Bank for Africa (UBA), and other financial institutions.
Naija News learnt that the fire began in the building’s inverter room before spreading upwards. Videos circulated on social media showed terrified occupants of the tower escaping through windows to save their lives.
The FIRS on Wednesday confirmed the death of four of its staff members. In a statement signed by Dare Adekanmbi, media aide to FIRS chairman, Zacch Adedeji, the agency said the victims died after inhaling thick smoke that engulfed the building.
“The deceased were working at the agency’s offices on the sixth and seventh floors when the fire broke out,” the statement read.
The FIRS provided the names and details of the four victims:
George Faith Ekelikhostse – Aged 58, an Assistant Director with the service. She tragically died just three days before her voluntary retirement, after 32 years of service.
Sunday-Jatto David – Aged 51, also an Assistant Director, with 15 years of service.
Ifaranmaye Peter – Aged 48, a Manager with nine years in service.
