Enyimba International FC of Aba climbed to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table on Sunday, September 14, with a decisive 2-0 win over Bayelsa United at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.
The People’s Elephant, who endured a below-par 2024/2025 NPFL campaign, looked like title contenders as they produced a strong second-half performance.
After a goalless first half, Chidera Michael broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, setting the tone for victory. Just five minutes later, Kalu Nweke doubled the lead, ensuring coach Stanley Eguma’s men left Yenagoa with all three points.
The win pushed Enyimba to the top of the standings with eight points from four matches, two wins, two draws, and no losses. They will host Bendel Insurance in Aba on September 21, while Bayelsa United aim to bounce back at home against Nasarawa United.
Elsewhere, Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa netted his first goal of the season to hand Kano Pillars a narrow 1-0 victory over Enugu Rangers at the Sani Abacha Stadium.
The former Leicester City and CSKA Moscow winger struck in the 65th minute after veteran midfielder Rabiu Ali had earlier missed a penalty. The result lifted Sai Masu Gida clear of the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, NPFL newcomers Kun Khalifat made history by recording their first-ever top-flight victory, a 3-1 triumph over El-Kanemi Warriors in Aba.
Ebuka Nwokorie was the hero, bagging a brace, while Onuorah Onyedika added another. El-Kanemi’s consolation came through Ebuka Okoro.
Founded just five years ago in Owerri, Kun Khalifat’s rise through the divisions has been rapid, and Sunday’s win was a milestone moment for the Imo-based club. Their next test will be against Shooting Stars in Ibadan.
