Confusion over the micro-zoning of key offices in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has unsettled members and further deepened internal wrangling as the opposition party struggles to reach a consensus ahead of its November national convention and the 2027 general elections.
Crisis brewed on Tuesday after stakeholders in Lagos and Osun States openly rejected the party’s proposed zoning arrangement, throwing their weight behind business leader, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, as their preferred presidential candidate.
Party insiders who spoke with Vanguard noted that the rejection has added fresh tension to an already fragile unity within the PDP.
At the heart of the crisis is the lack of clarity on micro-zoning, the delicate process of distributing top leadership positions among specific geopolitical zones or states.
The absence of a clear directive has left aspirants uncertain of their chances, triggering intense lobbying, backroom negotiations and horse-trading across the country.
Multiple sources told Vanguard that influential PDP figures were already traversing state capitals to mobilise support for their camps.
Speaking on the situation, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, said consultations were still in progress and that clarity would emerge at the party’s 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for October 15.
“Consultations are ongoing. We’ll know more when a definite decision is taken on micro-zoning during the party’s 103rd NEC meeting. By then, we should have a clear direction,” Osadolor assured.
