The Professional Footballers’ Association has stepped in to discuss the situation of Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi after both players were left out of Chelsea’s first-team plans.
Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi have been training away from the senior squad following head coach Enzo Maresca’s decision to exclude them.
The move has drawn attention from the players’ union, which is understood to be concerned about how the pair are being managed.
Sterling, 30, is one of Chelsea’s highest earners with a deal worth around £325,000 per week and still has close to two years left on his contract. Disasi, 27, signed a long-term agreement that runs until 2029.
Despite being linked with exits during the summer transfer window, both players remained at Stamford Bridge and now look unlikely to feature before January.
The PFA’s priority is to make sure the two footballers have the right conditions to train properly, even if they are not in the first-team picture.
FIFA regulations state that isolating players in a way that could be classed as abusive conduct may allow them to terminate their contracts with “just cause.”
In recent months, FIFA has been clear that clubs must provide adequate training and support to all contracted players, regardless of selection decisions. The PFA is said to have reminded Chelsea, and other clubs in similar situations, of those obligations.
