A German national was on Saturday morning attacked by a hoodlum while jogging in the Maitama area of Abuja.
The incident reportedly happened around 8 am along IBB Way, near Maitama Primary School, when the assailant dispossessed the victim of his phone and other belongings.
According to Daily Trust, a resident, Mathew Jamea, who claimed to be working in the neighbourhood, said the victim was accosted by two men riding on a motorcycle.
However, another witness in the area insisted that the attacker acted alone.
Police Confirm Incident
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Josephine Adeh, confirmed to journalists that the incident, saying the hoodlum was a lone attacker.
“The hoodlum, who was alone, snatched the victim’s phone. The matter was reported to the police and investigation is ongoing to track the phone,” she told Daily Trust.
Naija News understands that residents of the FCT have expressed concern over what they described as worsening insecurity in the nation’s capital.
A civil servant, Hannah Isayah, listed “one chance” robbers, phone and bike snatchers, child abductions in satellite towns, and armed robbery as threats that needed urgent government attention.
She said, “The insecurity threats include those from ‘one chance’ robbers, phone and bike snatchers, armed robbers, child stealing in some of the satellite towns, among others.”
In response, the Federal Capital Territory Administration has set up a special task force to tackle insecurity and has begun clearing shanties believed to harbour hoodlums in parts of the city.
It would be recalled that the United States Embassy had earlier warned its citizens to avoid military and government facilities in Abuja due to security threats.
