Thousands of supporters of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who had stormed the Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday morning to welcome him back after six months of emergency rule, went home disappointed as the governor failed to appear.
Many of the supporters, who travelled from rural and urban parts of the state, gathered at the entrance of the Government House as early as 6 a.m., waiting in anticipation of Fubara’s return.
However, by 12 noon to 1 p.m., most had dispersed after hours of waiting without sighting the governor.
Some of the immediate past local government chairmen loyal to Fubara led their supporters to the venue, including the former chairman of Obio/Akpor, Chijoke Ihunwo, and his counterpart from Port Harcourt City, Ezebunwo Itche-Mati.
The men were seen making frantic calls as the governor’s whereabouts remained unclear by early afternoon.
Interestingly, none of the supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, were present at the Government House. The newly elected local government chairmen allied with Wike were also absent.
Some of the supporters expressed frustration after waiting in vain.
“We are going because we are hungry. Maybe when the governor comes, we will return,” according to Punch, one supporter lamented while leaving the premises.
The gathering coincided with the expiration of the six-month emergency rule imposed on Rivers State in March, following a political standoff between Fubara and the Rivers House of Assembly, which Wike loyalists dominate.
President Bola Tinubu had at the time suspended the governor, his deputy, and the Assembly, appointing Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) as Sole Administrator.
On Wednesday, Tinubu formally lifted the emergency rule, clearing the path for Fubara, his deputy, and the lawmakers to resume democratic governance in the oil-rich state.
