The Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt remained deserted on Thursday as Governor Siminalayi Fubara failed to make his much-anticipated return after the expiration of the six-month emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu on March 18.
Hundreds of loyalists, including Fubara’s kinsmen from the Ijaw ethnic nationality, had thronged the gates of the Government House from early morning, expecting the governor’s dramatic comeback.
By dusk, however, there was no sign of Fubara anywhere in the state, leaving supporters frustrated. Many returned home in disappointment after hours under the scorching sun.
Earlier in the day, the outgone Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), formally ended his tenure, pulling out of the Brick House after handing over duties.
The exit of Ibas had heightened expectations that Fubara would immediately resume office. However, the governor, who has reportedly been out of the country, remained absent.
Sources within the Brick House confirmed to Vanguard that the seat of power is now largely empty. Members of the Government House Press Corps, protocol officers, and several workers were denied access to the facility.
The source said, “Nothing is happening in that place (Government House) now, until the governor resumes. That place is just empty.
“Many workers were not allowed to even enter Government House. It happens like during transitions. Only some security personnel attached to the Government House and a few civil servants are around. Until the governor resumes, that place will remain quiet.”
