World record holder and defending champion Tobi Amusan has powered her way into yet another global final, winning her semifinal heat in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Tobi Amusan clocked an impressive 12.36 seconds (-0.2) to secure first place, ahead of Nadine Visser of the Netherlands (12.45s) and Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska (12.51s). Her performance once again reaffirmed her reputation as one of the fiercest competitors in the hurdles, as she now prepares for the highly anticipated final.
However, Amusan’s remarkable run comes against the backdrop of a brewing storm within Nigerian athletics. Just days before her race, the hurdler took to Snapchat to blast the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for what she described as shoddy and disrespectful treatment of athletes representing the country.
According to her posts, athletes were handed poorly packaged kits in polybags, consisting of just one podium outfit, two undersized track kits, and no proper footwear or dinner gear. In sharp contrast, she pointed out how Jamaican athletes received well-arranged and complete kits.
Despite the controversy, Tobi Amusan has kept her focus on the track. With the final looming, the 27-year-old superstar remains one of Nigeria’s brightest hopes for gold on the world stage.
