Former heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, has stirred debate once again after boldly claiming that 19-year-old prospect Moses Itauma would defeat Oleksandr Usyk, Anthony Joshua, and other established names if they faced him in the ring currently.
Fury’s remarks came in the wake of Itauma’s explosive two-minute demolition of Dillian Whyte, a performance that has further cemented the teenager’s reputation as one of the brightest rising stars in boxing.
“I keep getting asked about young Moses Itauma fighting Oleksandr Usyk and fighting other big names, and my opinion is not (from) someone who doesn’t know boxing, my opinion is someone who has been there and won every single belt, won everything there is to win in boxing, and done very well,” Fury wrote on Instagram.
“Boxing is a young man’s game, like I told Wladimir Klitschko when he was 37. Boxing is a young man’s game, and it waits for nobody. So here’s the opinion, you’ve heard it here first: Moses Itauma will wreck all them old men out of the division.”
The “Gypsy King” went further, insisting that Usyk, Joshua, Jarrell Miller, Zhang Zhilei, Luis Ortiz and “all these big names of the past” would fall short against the teenage powerhouse.
“Even the world champion now, they took my belts and gave them to (him), Usyk, Moses will wreck him, because it’s a young man versus an old man, and old men can’t mess with young men,” Fury added.
Interestingly, many fans pointed out that Fury did not mention himself in the mix. But the 37-year-old quickly clarified: “I’ve been retired eight months and I’m an old man, too. Hence, I’m 37 and not 25!”
Fury, who holds a record of 34-2-1 (24 KOs), described Itauma (13-0, 11 KOs) as “the future of boxing,” a claim he insists he has been making for years. However, critics note that Fury previously made similar predictions about American prospect Jared Anderson, who later suffered a crushing defeat to Martin Bakole.
The comments have also reignited speculation about Fury’s own career. Despite announcing his “final” retirement for the fifth time, the former champion recently hinted at the possibility of a Wembley showdown with Usyk next April, suggesting his fighting days may not be over.
