United States midfielder Savannah DeMelo is recovering in the hospital after collapsing during Racing Louisville’s National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) clash against Seattle Reign on Sunday.
Savannah DeMelo, 27, fell to the ground in first-half stoppage time, prompting immediate medical attention on the pitch. After several minutes of treatment, she was stretchered off and transported to the hospital by ambulance.
League officials later confirmed that DeMelo is “stable and alert,” adding that her health remains the top priority.
“Savannah is stable and alert and getting the attention she needs,” the NWSL posted on 𝕏. “Our first priority is her health and safety. We are in close communication with Racing Louisville’s medical team. The NWSL remains committed to ensuring that the highest standards of medical care and emergency response are in place at every match.”
The match, which was goalless at the time of the incident, has been postponed and will resume at a later date.
Seattle Reign also expressed solidarity with their opponents. “Sending all our love to Savannah DeMelo and everyone at Racing Lou FC,” the club wrote on 𝕏. “We stand side by side with Louisville during this time and thank our fans for their support.”
DeMelo’s health has been a concern in recent months. She was forced off in a March fixture against Bay FC and, in May, revealed she had been diagnosed with Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism. Despite the challenges, she has continued to play a key role for Louisville and has earned seven caps with the U.S. women’s national team.
