Nigeria striker Victor Boniface has dismissed speculation surrounding his fitness after sealing a season-long loan move to Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen.
Victor Boniface, 24, completed the switch on transfer deadline day following a medical, bringing an end to a summer filled with uncertainty after proposed moves to AC Milan collapsed. He was officially unveiled by Bremen earlier this week.
Boniface, who was a key figure in Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign in 2023/2024, made it clear that questions about his condition are unfounded.
“Who’s questioning my fitness? If I weren’t fully fit, I’d be in a hospital bed, not sitting here talking to you,” Boniface told reporters during his unveiling. “Whatever the media say, that’s their business. If my body isn’t 100%, I won’t be here talking to you.”
Since arriving in Germany in 2023 from Union Saint-Gilloise, Boniface has scored 32 goals and provided 12 assists for Leverkusen across all competitions.
However, his international form has been less prolific. The Super Eagles forward has featured 13 times for Nigeria without scoring, and was left out of the squad by coach Eric Chelle for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda (scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 6) and South Africa.
Bremen are banking on Boniface to strengthen their attacking options as they look to push higher up the Bundesliga table. His experience in German football, coupled with his proven scoring ability, makes him a vital addition to the squad.
