Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed rumours on social media that he was critically ill and hospitalised in London.
Naija News reports that Akpabio made this known following his return to Nigeria in the wee hours of Monday after a vacation in London.
Akpabio arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, at 4 am and was received at the presidential wing by senators, aides, and supporters.
Speaking with journalists at the airport, Akpabio described reports of his ill health as ‘the imagination of the purveyors,’ emphasising that he stopped over in London for a short vacation.
He said, “There’s nothing like such. I’m fit as a fiddle. I only stopped over in London for a short vacation.”
Akpabio, who had earlier attended the sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 29 to 31, before proceeding to the UK, stated that the Nigerian delegation at the Geneva conference played a crucial role in advocating for deeper democratic governance and enhanced synergy between the arms of government.
Akpabio assured Nigerians of robust legislative engagements when the Senate resumes from recess.
Meanwhile, Akpabio has called on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to tender an apology, warning that the Senate is not a reality show.
Naija News recalls that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had made two attempts to resume plenary after months of suspension by the Senate, but she was prevented.
She had relied on the judgement of the Abuja Federal High Court, which she said nullified her six-month suspension by the parliament.
But in a statement to Daily Post on Monday, Kenny Okolugbo, an aide to the Senate President, disclosed that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s decision to approach the Appeal Court shows that the judgment she was relying on to return to the Senate did not nullify her suspension.
He pointed to Ground 23 of the senator’s appeal in the case Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan v. Clerk of the National Assembly & Ors, arguing that it contradicts her public claim that she was reinstated by the Federal High Court, calling on the suspended lawmaker to publicly apologize over her actions rather than relying on a non-existing court judgement.
