Popular Nigerian singer, Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has claimed that he was robbed by the American music magazine, Billboard.
He lamented that the Billboard snubbed his songs in its recently released Top 50 ‘Best Afrobeats Songs of All-Time’ list.
Naija News reports that African Queen’ by 2Face topped the list curated by Billboard staff. Timaya’s ‘Dem Mama’, Weird MC’s ‘Ijoya’, and ‘Yahooze’ by Olu Maintain also made the cut.
However, Terry G’s hit songs, including ‘Akpako Master’, ‘Free Madness’, ‘Run Mad’, and others, were conspicuously missing from the list.
Reacting to a post by music monitoring platform, Chart Data, reporting ‘African Queen’ as number one on the list, Terry G claimed that he was “robbed.” He wrote, “TERRY G robbed.”
His post elicited mixed reactions, with some fans agreeing that he deserves to be on the list, while others argued that none of his songs stand a chance against ‘African Queen’ for the number one spot.
Meanwhile, Terry G has described himself as an independent artist.
He stated that performing at a political function does not affiliate him with any party.
Speaking in a recent episode of The Real Shareholders podcast, Terry G said it was unfair for fans to judge him for performing at political events when he has never endorsed any party or candidate at such events.
He said, “As an artist, we are usually billed to perform. In the current economy, if you’re opportuned to even get a gig from a political party, you’re lucky. So, respect to the party.
“But as a musician, I’m just doing my job [performing], I’m an independent artist. I’m so independent. I only went to political events to perform. At least, fans should have judged me based on what I said there, but they are now judging me based on what I did.
“No, you don’t need to judge me for that. I went to do my job. If I had said people should vote for APC, that’s a different thing. I went to do my job just like my other colleagues. I don’t know why mine is different.”
Naija News recalls that Terry G received backlash on social media for performing at President Bola Tinubu’s pre-inauguration concert at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, in May, 2023.
In November 2023, he called out the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, over alleged debt, claiming that some persons hijacked the money he was supposed to get for performing at the controversial event.
