[Breaking] Afriland Towers Fire: Six More Deaths Confirmed, Toll Rises To 10

At least six additional fatalities have been confirmed from the fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial complex on Broad Street, Lagos Island, bringing the death toll to 10 persons.

The latest victims were employees of United Capital Plc, an investment and financial services firm operating from the 3rd and 4th floors of the building.

In a statement on Thursday, the company said, “It is with profound grief that the Management and Staff of United Capital Plc announce the passing of six of our dear colleagues, following the tragic fire at Afriland Towers on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

“Our departed colleagues were an integral part of our company and family. Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void. We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones, and we continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers, as well as provide all the support we can to them during this most difficult time.”

United Capital also disclosed plans to hold a memorial service in their honour.

The confirmation by United Capital comes hours after the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) announced that four of its staff working on the sixth and seventh floors of the tower also died in the inferno.

FIRS identified the victims as George Faith Ekelikhostse (58), Sunday-Jatto David (51), Ifaranmaye Peter (48), and Onyemelukwe Nkem (54).

The agency explained that the staff died after inhaling thick smoke that enveloped the building during the incident.

The fire reportedly broke out around 1:30 pm on Tuesday in the inverter room located in the basement of the building, before spreading upwards and filling the tower with smoke.

Videos shared on social media showed terrified occupants attempting to escape through windows as emergency responders battled to contain the flames.

Officials of the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other first responders confirmed rescuing nine victims, five of whom were revived, while four remained unconscious.
