Three members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara were conspicuously absent during Thursday’s plenary session, the first since President Bola Tinubu lifted the state of emergency in the state.
The lawmakers, Victor Oko-Jumbo, Sokari Goodboy Sokari, and Adolphus Timothy Oruibienimigha, did not attend the sitting, which was held at the Assembly quarters.
The State Assembly Complex is still undergoing reconstruction after it was demolished following an explosion that rocked the facility on October 29, 2023.
The three absent legislators had remained the only lawmakers standing by Governor Fubara at the peak of the political crisis that split the House, with 27 members openly backing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
It is still unclear whether the rift between the two factions has been fully resolved despite the peace process initiated after months of tension.
Interestingly, two of the pro-Fubara lawmakers, Oko-Jumbo and Sokari, were seen at the celebration ground outside the Government House on Thursday, where crowds had gathered to welcome the governor following the end of the emergency rule.
Meanwhile, the state House of Assembly, on Thursday, also urged Fubara to prepare the budget and transmit the list of commissioners’ nominees for screening and confirmation.
Speaker of the House Martin Amaewhule presided over the plenary session in the conference hall, located within the legislative quarters.
