Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has declared that only God will decide his political future ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that leadership is not a matter of humans making but an act of divine will.
The governor stated this during the inauguration of the Shura Council, the state’s apex advisory body, held at the Government House, Kano.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, Yusuf reflected on his turbulent journey after the 2023 elections, saying he had been written off by many before providence made him governor.
He said, “I faced the most difficult challenges of my life after the 2023 elections. But through those challenges and tears, I remain committed to the service of Kano. I am still here because of God, not because of any individual.”
The governor added, “Leadership is never in the hands of man. God installs and removes leaders as He wishes.”
Yusuf stressed that his administration would not be distracted by political calculations ahead of 2027 but would remain focused on programmes that uplift the people.
“Whether I seek re-election or not, my duty is to keep delivering meaningful programmes that will benefit the electorate,” he affirmed.
Acknowledging the temporality of power, he said, “I know that one day I will vacate this seat. That is why I am doing my best now to transform Kano physically, socially, and morally.”
The governor expressed worry about the plight of Kano youths, citing drug abuse, thuggery, and other vices as major threats to their future.
As part of efforts to address the challenge, Yusuf announced the establishment of a new reformatory institution for women, aimed at rehabilitating victims of drug abuse and other social problems.
He also urged clerics to utilise their influence in support of the government’s reform agenda, stating that religious leaders play a critical role in shaping society.
