The number of casualties from Sunday’s bandit attack on Wake village in Kachia Local Government Area, Southern Kaduna, has risen to nine, following the death of one of the critically injured survivors.
According to SaharaReporters, a source monitoring the situation confirmed that the victim succumbed to injuries on Sunday night while receiving treatment in Kaduna.
“Yes, I can confirm to you that one of the survivors passed on last night in Kaduna. We are waiting for the corpse to arrive here in Kachia,” the source said, adding that the victim’s name would not be released until the body was returned home.
Naija News understands that the assault on Wake village occurred in the early hours of Sunday, when heavily armed bandits stormed the community in Agunu Ward.
Residents had disclosed that the attackers moved in large numbers, shooting indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee.
At least eight people were initially confirmed dead, while 18 others sustained injuries, and an unspecified number of residents were abducted.
“I can confirm that bandits killed eight of our people in Wake village, injured about 18, and kidnapped several others,” a community source reported.
The injured were reportedly rushed to nearby health facilities. Those in critical condition were transferred to hospitals in Kaduna for advanced care.
However, the Kaduna State Government has not issued any statement on the Wake village killings or the broader wave of violence across the state, Naija News understands.
The silence contrasts with Governor Uba Sani’s appearance on a live television programme on Sunday night, where he insisted that insecurity in troubled areas such as Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Kachia, Zango Kataf, Kauru, and Igabi had been “largely addressed,” allowing residents to return to their farms.
Notably, the governor made no mention of the fresh killings in Kauru and Kachia, nor of the recent kidnappings in Kubau, Makarfi, and Kudan, previously regarded as relatively secure local councils.
The gap between official assurances and the situation on the ground has drawn criticism from residents and community leaders, who accuse the government of downplaying the crisis.
They are calling for stronger security measures, more transparent communication, and a decisive response to end the recurring attacks that have left many communities in fear.
