The Federal Government has declared that Nigeria is on the path to achieving sustainability in its power sector, with signs pointing toward uninterrupted electricity supply in the near future.
Naija News reports that Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, stated this on Thursday in Abuja while inaugurating two blocks housing five training workshops and a 104-room hostel at the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN).
Adelabu described the projects as a milestone for both the institute and the sector, stressing that President Bola Tinubu’s administration was walking the talk and converting vision into action.
“In no time, we are going to witness a country where there is 24/7 uninterrupted power supply. This is possible and we have certainly seen the signs,” he said.
The minister noted that recent improvements had led to the highest power generation and transmission in Nigeria’s history, attributing this to the government’s renewed efforts.
He added that the government was deliberately lighting up universities, teaching hospitals, primary health centres, and public institutions, recognising electricity as the backbone of economic transformation.
“We have what it takes to start manufacturing our own meters, cables, transformers, transmission transformers and batteries. We have the brain. We have the people. We must be self-reliant and sustainable, and we are very close to achieving this,” Adelabu said.
Highlighting the importance of the newly inaugurated facilities, Adelabu said the workshops and hostel underscored the government’s resolve to build a skilled workforce capable of tackling the challenges of a rapidly evolving energy sector.
According to him, the infrastructure would provide young Nigerians with modern tools and training to drive innovation and job creation.
In his remark, the Director-General of NAPTIN, Ahmed Nagode, said the projects represented a foundation for a brighter future, adding that the institute planned to explore partnerships under its Next Generation Rescue Programme to train and empower young Nigerian leaders.
He commended the European Union (EU) and the French Government, which, through the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), provided funding and technical expertise for the projects.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, disclosed that the bloc committed €8 million to the project and had developed 95 courses for NAPTIN, 65 technical and 30 non-technical.
He added that since 2008, the EU had invested over €200 million in Nigeria’s power sector, with a new renewable energy package worth €100 million expected to deliver 400 megawatts of clean energy by 2027, benefitting more than five million Nigerians.
