Luis Suarez’s fiery temperament has landed him in trouble once again after the Inter Miami forward was handed a six-match suspension for spitting at a Seattle Sounders staff member during the Leagues Cup final.
The ugly confrontation came immediately after Miami’s 3-0 defeat to the Sounders on August 31, when emotions spilt over in a post-match incident.
Suarez, visibly frustrated, grabbed Seattle midfielder Obed Vargas by the neck before his long-time Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets struck Vargas on the chin.
Things quickly escalated when Suarez clashed with the Sounders’ director of security, Gene Ramirez. He had to be restrained by Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari, but not before spitting directly into Ramirez’s face, an act that triggered outrage.
The 38-year-old striker, who has never been far from controversy in his career, later issued a public apology via Instagram, saying he regretted his behaviour.
The Leagues Cup disciplinary committee confirmed the six-match suspension would only apply to next year’s edition of the tournament. However, Major League Soccer “reserves the right” to impose additional sanctions, leaving open the possibility of further punishment.
Suarez’s teammates did not escape unscathed either. Busquets has been banned for two games, while Tomas Aviles was hit with a three-game suspension. On the Sounders’ side, coaching staff member Steven Lenhart has been slapped with a five-match ban for his role in the chaotic scenes.
The Leagues Cup, a joint competition featuring clubs from Major League Soccer and Mexico’s Liga MX, has grown in intensity in recent years, but rarely has it seen a flashpoint as controversial as this.
For Suarez, however, such incidents are not new. His career has been punctuated by disciplinary lapses, including an infamous eight-match ban in 2011 for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra while at Liverpool, as well as three separate suspensions for biting opponents during stints with Ajax, Liverpool, and the Uruguayan national team.
