Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Monday, 8th September, 2025

Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Monday, 8th September, 2025

1. Tinubu Govt Summons Emergency Meeting Over NUPENG Strike

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led federal government has decided to engage with the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Dangote Refinery over their face-off.

Naija News understands that the federal government is appealing to NUPENG to suspend its planned nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Monday, September 8, 2025.

Confirming the government’s decision to resolve the dispute on Sunday, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, disclosed that he has summoned all parties to a conciliation meeting on Monday in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the ministry’s head of information and public relations, Patience Onuobia, Dingyadi urged NUPENG to rescind its decision to shut down operations in the petroleum sector and appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to withdraw the “red alert” it issued to its affiliates in solidarity with the oil workers.

He warned that industrial action in the petroleum sector would trigger widespread hardship across the country and inflict heavy losses on government revenue.

2. NLC Demands Review, Tells FG ₦70,000 Minimum Wage No Longer Okay

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a review of the ₦70,000 national minimum wage, insisting that the current figure can no longer meet the needs of workers in the prevailing economy.

The call was made by the Acting General Secretary of the NLC, Benson Upah, during a chat with newsmen in Abuja on Sunday.

He argued that most workers are unable to meet their basic needs based on the ₦70,000 minimum wage as a result of galloping inflation, rising costs of food, transportation, housing, and other essential services.

The NLC official added that the Labour Union is already negotiating with the government to review the minimum wage and would not hesitate to embark on a strike if negotiations fail.

Naija News recalls that President Bola Tinubu signed the new National Minimum Wage Bill into law in July 2024, raising the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.

3. I Won’t Delete That Tweet – Sowore Dares Tinubu Govt Over 𝕏 Post

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has vowed never to delete a social media post that drew the ire of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In a statement on Sunday, Sowore said the DSS had written to 𝕏 (formerly Twitter), demanding the deactivation of his account within 24 hours.

The activist claimed the security agency’s move followed a protest staged at the Federal High Court and the Ministry of Justice by alleged pro-government demonstrators who called for his arrest.

According to him, the action was unconstitutional and amounted to “a desecration of national dignity.”

He accused the DSS of attempting to “export national disgrace to the US” by pressuring social media companies to silence dissenting voices.

Sowore also alleged that both the DSS and the police had subjected him to persistent harassment.

4. NNPP Declares Jibrin’s Expulsion Null And Void

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has dismissed the purported expulsion of lawmaker representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano State, Abdulmumin Jibrin, describing it as “baseless and unauthorised.”

In a statement issued in Abuja late Saturday, the party’s National Secretary, Oginni Sunday, said the announcement lacked legitimacy.

Naija News reports that Sunday explained that the declaration was made by Hashim Dungurawa, a former Kano State chairman who had earlier been expelled from the NNPP.

He described Dungurawa’s action as “a joke taken too far,” adding that “a non-member cannot attempt to expel a sitting federal lawmaker.”

The party further cited an April 2, 2025, judgment of a Federal Capital Territory High Court and a ruling from an Abia State High Court, which confirmed the expulsion of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and his allies, including Dungurawa.

5. Governor, APC Not Responsible For Attack On Malami, He Breached The Law – Kebbi Govt

The Kebbi State government has absolved itself of any blame in the attack on the convoy of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

The government added that it was also proactive and ordered investigations immediately after the attack.

Naija News reports that the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Ahmad Idris, who made the submission in a brief interview with Daily Trust, also described as “false and misleading”, claims on social media that the state government was responsible for the violence.

He added that there is no truth in claims that the All Progressives Congress (APC) members were behind the attack on Malami’s convoy, which happened last week.

Speaking further, the Governor’s spokesperson explained that Malami breached the law by coming with a convoy and sirens into Birnin Kebbi, which he is no longer entitled to use as an ordinary citizen, thereby disturbing the peace of the town.

He also accused Malami’s supporters of inciting political opponents.

6. Nigeria In Grip Of Full-Blown Security Emergency – Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has described as frightening the spate of killings across parts of the country, warning that Nigeria is facing a “full-blown security emergency.”

Obi, in a post on his official 𝕏 handle on Sunday, lamented recent attacks in Borno, Edo, Sokoto, and Katsina states, which claimed over 100 lives within one week.

In Borno, suspected Boko Haram terrorists killed dozens of civilians and soldiers at Darul Jamal, Bama Local Government Area. Similarly, in Katsina, bandits murdered six people and kidnapped over 130 others during raids on Sabuwa communities.

Also, in Edo, gunmen suspected to be kidnappers killed eight officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and abducted a Chinese expatriate in Okpella, Etsako East LGA.

While condoling with the families of victims, the former Anambra governor called for swift justice.

He urged the government to “suspend all distractions” and focus on tackling insecurity, warning that Nigeria’s casualty figures now rival those of countries officially at war.

7. Drama As Fan Storms Stage To Attack Naira Marley In Benin Republic

A Naira Marley concert in the Benin Republic, on Saturday, turned chaotic after a fan stormed the stage in an attempt to attack the singer.

The Marlian Music boss was in the middle of his performance when the unidentified man charged at him. Security operatives quickly intercepted the intruder and bundled him off the stage, preventing what could have been a violent scene.

The incident, captured in a trending video, has since gone viral on social media, sparking heated reactions and speculations about the motive of the stage invader.

The incident comes weeks after the singer publicly addressed controversies surrounding the death of his former signee, Mohbad, who died on September 12, 2023, in Lagos at the age of 27.

Mohbad’s death triggered the #Justice4MohBad movement, with many Nigerians demanding accountability over the circumstances that led to his passing.

8. Losing 80kg Weight One Of My Greatest Achievements – Eniola Badmus Says On 43rd Birthday

Nollywood actress, Eniola Badmus, has described her weight loss journey as one of her most outstanding achievements as she marks her birthday.

Naija News reports that the 43-year-old actress, who lost 80 kg, said the transformation has changed her life in many ways.

She explained that she now breathes with ease, enjoys better sleep, eats healthier, and lives lighter both physically and mentally.

Badmus reflected on the challenges she has faced over the years, saying that her current health status stands as proof of how far she has come.

She added that the journey has been rewarding and a testimony she will always cherish.

9. EFCC Declaring Me Wanted Would Be A Dream Come True – Odumodublvck

Nigerian rapper, Tochukwu Gbubemi Ojogwu, popularly known as Odumodublvck, has stirred online debate after saying that being declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) would be a dream come true for him.

Naija News reports that the rapper commented while reacting to the anti-graft agency’s recent notice declaring luxury property developer Olasijibomi “Sujimoto” Ogundele wanted.

He playfully suggested that he would consider it a personal achievement if his name ever appeared on an EFCC wanted flier, even if only for a short period.

His post generated some reactions as many fans found it amusing, while others faulted him for making light of a matter linked to corruption and fraud.

10. Doris, Ivatar, Big Soso Evicted From BBNaija House

The Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) Season 10 reality show witnessed a turn of events on Sunday as three housemates were evicted during the live eviction show.

Naija News reports that the proceedings began with a dramatic twist, where 19 out of the 22 remaining housemates were nominated for eviction.

This move came after a search for an envelope containing an immunity card, leaving only Mensan, Faith, and Zita safe from elimination.

The first housemate to be evicted was Big Soso, a 28-year-old lawyer and chef from Kaduna State.

Her departure marked the eighth eviction of the season.

Following her, Ivatar, a 37-year-old media personality from Anambra State, was the second housemate to leave the show.

The final eviction of the night was Doris, a 34-year-old content creator from Imo State, who became the tenth contestant to exit the house.

The evictions have left the remaining housemates reflecting on their strategies and alliances as they continue to vie for the grand prize of a hundred and fifty million.
